The Powers Park Renovation Committee was formed in 2005 with the purpose of renovating and rejuvenating a gem in the rough - Powers Park. Taking up a large block in the center of Barrett, the land was donated in 1942 by Dr. Fletcher Powers with the express wish it be used for a children's play area.
When the committee was formed, the existing playground equipment was outdated and much of it was unsafe. The group's plan was to remove the old equipment and replace it with new playground equipment. They also planned to build a basketball court. Their efforts were met with broad support and the project snowballed from there.
There were fundraisers which included dances, a chili feed with silent auction, and pancake breakfast. Grants and donations were received from local and regional businesses. Organizations such as the Fire Department and Senior Citizens also pitched in. A Bench sponsorship program was begun and soon after a Brick drive to help fund the project.
These days Powers Park is flourishing. There is a large playground area with new equipment. The basketball court is complete. There is a drinking fountain placed on a pad of bricks engraved with the names of park supporters. The benches were built by the shop class of West Central Area Secondary School under the direction of John Kreft. Mr. Kreft's shop class has also reroofed the picnic shelter.
So stop by some time and check out the activity and consider having your next gathering in Powers Park.
This is an ongoing project. So please consider making a donation! Donations can be sent to Powers Park Renovation Fund, PO Box 155, Barrett, MN 56311.
